97 Yard Drive Highlights First Half For UK

Already, we’ve seen the good and the bad of UK football during the first half versus Toledo. The bright spot of the first half was a 14 play, 97 yard touchdown drive which absurdly ended with a touchdown on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Tight End, Justin Rigg.

Early on in the game, it became very apparent that our fears for the UK Secondary would become realized in a big way. Despite a handful of tackles by Jordan Griffin and Yusuf Corker, we have watched Toledo QB Mitchell Guadagni pick the UK Defense apart with a balanced run and passing attack. So far, Jamari Brown appears to be the target, often being beaten off the line and vulnerable to big play opportunities for the Rocket offense. He’s young, and we saw plenty of moments from last year’s senior CB’s that showed us that it is a development and maturity position. Luckily, juco transfer Brandin Echols has shown that the hype surrounding him on the practice field transfers to game day. His deflection of a 3rd down pass in UK terrirtory late in the 2nd quarter might be the defensive highlight of the game so far for Kentucky.

The difference maker in the game so far has been UK’s inability to stop Toledo on 3rd down. That must improve if the Cats are going to avoid an upset today.

Don’t give up on the Cats! We’ll see how Stoops and the UK defense adjusts for the 2nd half.
